East Coast and New England – 21 Jan 2016

Our Tropical Storm Research Center normally does not comment on inland storms, however, with the development of a record breaking winter storm that will affect millions of persons along the East Coast and parts of New England over the next 4 to 6 days, we thought that we would at least mention it here.

Rare January Atlantic Hurricane – Alex –

Named Storm Alex formed off the Atlantic African coast from a strong tropical wave. This hurricane is the first to develop in the Atlantic basin in Januiary since just before World War II.
This storm will be tracking across the Azores and into the far northern Atlantic over the next 4 days where it will weaken.  Since this storm poses no threat to the coastal US, this will be our only mention of 2016 Named Storm Alex.
