Gustav Expected to Strengthen

The National Hurricane Center expects Gustav to strengthen to a Category 3+ hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. The models, as evidenced in the graphic vary greatly, but the current thought is a potential landfall in or near Louisiana. Our area remains in the potential cone of impact.

Preparations should begin NOW. The graphic to the right depicts the intensity forecast, nearly all of the models bring Gustav to a Catagory 3 or higher. The unofficial word is that portions of Louisiana are considering evacuations as early as Saturday. With this storm encroaching, travelers over the holiday weekend should be especially diligent and monitor this storm closely.

  1. Regional and area-wide potential involvement:

Gustav has forced the major pipeline companies to start evacuating workers from the nearly 3000 drilling platforms in the potential Gulf of Mexico strike zone. These evacuation precautions are well advised after what Ivan and Katrina did to these oil and natural gas facilities in 2004 and 2005. Not only will we all see a gas pump price increase because of the Holiday weekend, but we will see an increase in pricing from the heavy oil and gas futures trading in the stock market this Friday and into next week.

Gustav is approcahing hurricane force again and may be upgraded to Cat 1+ strength within 6 to 12 hours. Track projections, as shown in Acral’s main post in this thread, are still accurate as of 13:30 Hrs CDT today.

Persons from the Florida Keys to the Texas-Mexico border should stay alert and tune to your local media and NOAA weather broadcast stations frequently regarding official Emergency Government and National Weather Service orders and advisories.

Acral or I will update this area as conditions warrant. Take care and be safe.
