As the 2020 Atlantic Basin Season Winds Down…

The official end of the 2020 Tropical System season in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico ends on November 30. However, since this season has been one for the record books, our volunteer staff will be monitoring conditions well into December. If any additional storms form and are named by the National Hurricane Center, we will add our unofficial advisories here to supplement the official information releases.

Until then, please use the link below, to the National Weather Service – Interactive Map for inland storm tracking and information. Thank you for using the Tropical Storm Research Center website.

Named Storm Iota – 2020

Named Storm Iota – 2020 formed in the Central Caribbean from a tropical low pressure area (Invest 98-L). This storm is moving generally to the west-northwest and will be gaining strength. So far, most tracking model agencies are projecting an Eastern Central America involvement at possible Hurricane strength. If the track changes more to the north, we will post an unofficial update accordingly. Otherwise, since no US interests may be affected by Named Storm Iota at this time, this may be our only mention of it.

Please visit the National Hurricane Center website for official news and advisories.

Named Storm Eta -2020 -unofficial update Nov. 10, and mention of Named Storm Theta.

Tropical Storm Eta is moving very slowly northerly off the Gulf Coast of Florida. This storm system is encountering upper level shear and some dry air along it’s path but still may make Hurricane strength. Current projections from many tracking agencies are for a second Florida landfall between Pensacola, Florida, and Tampa, Florida, within the next 30 hours. Persons along the Florida Gulf Coast and Panhandle can expect moderate rainfall with some lowland flooding as well as gusty winds, rip currents and beach erosion from high waves.

In keeping with our policy of at least mentioning all named storms, Named Storm Theta formed in the central north Atlantic and is moving easterly toward Spain. It is not a threat to the US, so this will be our only mention of Theta.

We are continuing to monitor Named Storm Eta and will post additional unofficial advisories if needed.

Please visit the National Hurricane Center website for official news and advisories.

Named Storm Eta 2020 – Unofficial Updates Monday, November 2 and Saturday, November 7, 2020.

Named Storm Eta has made Hurricane Status and may make Major category within 24 hours. This storm is just off the coast of Nicaragua (Monday November. 2, 2020 @ 11:35 AM EST) and will be picked up by southwest to northeast steering currents by early Friday, November 6. This system will travel through the far western Caribbean and potentially into the southern Gulf of Mexico by November 9 to 11. Once it gets into the warm water of the Gulf, some intensification is possible. All persons along the Gulf Coast of the US should be monitoring this storm carefully.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2020: After encountering mountains in Central America, Eta was reduced to Depression strength, but is back over water in the western Caribbean and may strengthen to Tropical Storm again soon. Long range projections from most tracking agencies are placing Eta into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by late Monday night, November 9. The steering currents aloft in the Gulf will most likely steer the storm northerly starting Tuesday, November 10. Therefore, we are renewing our call for all residents of the Coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico to monitor the progress of this storm carefully.
